Introduction: The Aga Khan University (AKU)’s upcoming Faculty of Arts and Sciences in East Africa is developing the world’s first digital Kiswahili Collection. The work on the Collection commenced in January 2015 and it is being led by Dr Farouk Topan, revered Kiswahili language and literature scholar and now a Senior Fellow with AKU’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. AKU is looking to recruit a Research Specialist (Kiswahili) initially on a fixed-term contract until December 2015, to work with Dr Topan to identify materials, construct bibliographies for use in research, write scholarly articles and other related documents, and be involved in writing research proposals to secure funding for this work.
Responsibilities: The incumbent will be based in London but will work internationally to pursue the work of identifying and compiling an inventory of manuscripts, thesis and other documents/publications in Kiswahili and related to Kiswahili collections.
Requirements: Successful candidate will have a PhD with research experience in humanities or social sciences. Experience of working with manuscripts, particularly in Arabic script, in different conservation environments, is required. The incumbent must have excellent proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English and Kiswahili languages.
